Adoption of reduced tillage fallow systems and green manure incorporation in the irrigation zones of Mexico has been very limited, in spite of several reports that describe the benefits from those practices. At present, it is well recognized that conventional tillage, consisting of one-pass ploughing, one or two passes with a harrow, and the absence of residue-incorporation, has propitiated severe degrees of degradation, especially in arid zones, where natural fertility is low, mainly due to the organic matter content. In the present study, we utilized one of the most sophisticated analysis tools to assess the effect of reduced tillage and green manure on fertility variables of a classic sandy soil in northwest of Mexico. We evaluated the effect of three levels of tillage and dolichos Dolichus lab lab green manure incorporation, on the recovery of fertility of soil with poor nutrient characteristics such as an initial organic matter content of 0.4%. A univariate analysis was performed on the obtained data and showed, in the first instance, that the organic matter and N, P, and K contents were significantly higher in a sample taken two months after the incorporation of green manure, compared with the previous sampling. The canonical correlation analysis (ACC) was later used through CANOCO software. ACC showed significant recovery after the green manure incorporation with respect to macronutrient (N, P, and K) content, and organic matter.
