In Mexico there is a lack of information about the content of heavy metals in soils. Available data proceed from information generated in other countries and extrapolated to conditions of Mexican soil. The aim of this research was to generate the first approach of permissible limits for cadmium, nickel, and lead accumulation in soil. The methodology consisted in solving a model that relates permissible limits to variables such as dose of daily metal intake, type of consumed food, metal transference from soil to crops, and plant species grown in non-polluted areas and those polluted with heavy metal. Permissible limits for Cd accumulation in non-polluted soil ranged from 25.1 to 66.5 kg ha(-1); in contrast, in polluted soils the permissible limits varied from 7.5 to 14.6 kg ha(-1), which is restrictive and comparable to those proposed for legislation in Europe. The proposed maximum concentration of lead ranged from 3.7 to 21.3 kg ha(-1), a range that included soils polluted with Pb. The data for Pb indicate that the model produces restrictive values compared with the norms that regulate this metal in soil, whereas the permissible maximum concentration for Ni in polluted soils varied from 307 to 1324 kg ha(-1).
