Reduced glutathione content of erythrocytes in the newborn: comparison with maternal levels

Extract: Reduced glutathione reductase in blood was assayed as an index of riboflavin status in 87 mothers and their neonates at parturition. In addition, Hb, Hct and GSH levels in the cord blood were compared with maternal levels to determine whether a relationship existed or whether neonatal birth weights were influenced by maternal riboflavin nutriture. The data indicated that cord levels of Hb, Hct and GSH were influenced by maternal levels; however, cord levels were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than maternal levels. The regression analyses showed that maternal Hb of 11.0 g/dl corresponded to cord Hb of 13.8 g/dl and GSH level of 180 ug/ml. Although an association existed betweeen placental weight and birth weight of babies (r = 0.8811, P less than 0.002) and between maternal age and neonatal weight (r = 0.3085, P less than 0.05); no association existed between maternal GSH level and neonatal birth weight. The data further suggest that maternal iron status affects maternal GSH level because mothers with low Hb had low GSH values and gave birth to babies with low Hb and GSH values.(author)
