Effects of distillers dried grains with solubles and dietary magnesium, vanadium and chromium on the hen performance and egg quality

Two experiments with White Leghorn hens were conducted to investigate the effects of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or mineral supplements on performance and interior egg quality. Adding 20 or 30% DDGS did not increase interior egg quality, as measured by Haugh units, or ovomucin content of fresh and stored eggs. Performance of hens fed DDGS was equivalent to the basal corn-soy diet except for a significant reduction in egg size in young hens and a significant increase in shell breaking strength in old hens fed 30% DDGS. Added magnesium (1.1%) reduced body weight, egg production, egg weight, shell breaking strength and shell thickness. In contrast to other studies, no improvement in interior egg quality was observed by magnesium supplementation. Adding vanadium (5 ppm) reduced Haugh unit values and generally reduced ovomucin content, but did not affect the performance parameters. Chromium (10 ppm) failed to counteract the deleterious effect of vanadium on interior egg quality.
