Unplanned nutrition education in the schools: Sugar in elementary reading texts
1983
D'Onofrio, Carol | Singer, Rosalind
An analysis of 1,666 prereaders and reading books (grades K-3) evaluated food content emphasis in both words and pictures. One of every 12 food appearances was cake. Fruits and vegetables were featured more often than sugary foods, but were consumed less frequently. Regular meals were featured less than snacking, eating treats, or having parties. Not much thought was given to nutritional value of foods and rarely were families shown eating together. These subtle messages may work against the promotion of healthy eating habits. (kbc)
