Two currently-approved commercial intravenous fat emulsions (i.e., Intralipid, a soybean oil emulsion; and Liposyn, a safflower oil emulsion), recommended as supplemental caloric sources for patients on total parenteral nutrition (or for essential fatty acid deficiency), have a different fatty acid composition. The major difference in the 2 products is the alpha-linolenic acid content, with Intralipid containing the most (8% vs. 0.5%). This acid is a precursor to n-3 fatty acids, the human physiological importance of which is not known. Nonetheless, it is recommended that since long-term clinical experience exists for Intralipid but not for Liposyn, physicians using Liposyn as a long-term sole fat source should monitor neurologic, retinal, and testicular function of their patients.
