Impact of Foliar Application of Iron-chelate and Iron Nano Particles on Some Morpho-physiological Traits and Rssential Oil Composition of Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.)

Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) from Lamiaceae family is one of the most important medicinal plants, used in food, sanitary and cosmetic industries. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Nano iron and iron-chelate on morpho-physiological traits and essential oil composition of peppermint. A factorial experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replications in Karaj, Iran, in 2015. Treatments were Iron fertilizer in two levels (iron nanoparticles and iron-chelate) and concentration in four levels (0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/l). The iron fertilizers were applied in foliar application in three times of the interval of 15 days up to flowering stages. Results showed Nano iron significantly increased chlorophyll content, stem number and essential oil content. The higher chlorophylls content were obtained in Nano iron (1.5 g/l). There were no significant differences between the low and high concentration of Nano iron for essential oil content, so that, Nano iron (0.5 g/l) had increased the essential oil content and oil production up to 60 and 50% than in control, respectively. The effects of treatments were significant on 8 out of 34 compositions. Nano iron (0.5 g/l) had increased menthone and menthol content up to 65% and 30% higher than control, respectively. Similarly, Nano iron (1.5 g/l) had strongly increased menthofuran 2.5 times higher than control. It was concluded that foliar application of Nano iron (0.5 g/l) in flowering stage had increased dry matter yield and essential oil content and composition of peppermint.
