Lactose intolerance in North and South Indians

The incidence of lactose intolerance in healthy volunteers from different parts of India was found to be much higher (66.6%) in subjects from South India than that observed in North Indian residents (27.4%). This finding may be explained by the fact that Punjabis from North India are descended from Aryans who historically kept domestic animals for their milk and established the practice of dairying in India. Pubjabis thus have inherited both a habit of consuming milk, as well as tolerance to lactose. However, lactose intolerance should not deter the use of milk as a dietary supplement in Indian communities.
