Iron status and inflammatory processes in anaemic children

A study assessed the contribution of iron deficiency and the inflammatory process in the etiology of anemia in children in southern Benin in western Africa and identified several indicators and correlation factors of iron status in children with/without biological evidence of inflammatory processes. Below normal hemoglobin values were found in all children of both groups. Below normal values for transferrin saturation and serum ferritin were similar in both groups, with higher mean values found in children with evidence of an inflammatory process. Erythrocyte protoporphyrin was similarly higher than normal in both groups. Above normal values were found in children with an inflammatory process for orosomucoid, CRP, and white cell counts, while for non-inflammatory children, none were above normal. However, the proportion of iron-deficient children was similar with/without the presence of an inflammatory process. The implication of these results are discussed.(wz)
