Identification of Suitable Parents for Hybrid and Recombination Breeding in Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) for Seed Yield and Oil Content
2015
Sreeja, R. | Chidambaram, S.
A study was conducted in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) to identify best parental combinations using eight lines and six testers and their 48 hybrids for eleven yield and yield related traits including oil content. The study revealed predominance of non-additive gene action for all the traits. Based on the mean performance and gca effect, the parents TNAU72 for seed yield and TM V3 for oil content and SI833 for both seed yield and oil content, were ideal to be used in hybridization programmes. The hybrid combinations identified for heterosis breeding were SI833 x TMV4, SI763 x TMV3 and TNAU72 x CO1 for seed yield and yield related traits and IS176 x VRI1 for oil content, as they possessed high mean performance, sca effect and heterosis for the respective traits. The hybrid SI833 x TMV3 can be used in recombination breeding to identify the transgressive segregants in the RILs, as their parents possessed high gca and high mean.
