The expanding body of scientific research in recent years linking diet and health has fostered increased attention on the role of nutrition in health promotion and disease prevention. Within this dynamic, emerging background, the ILSI North America Technical Committee on Food Components for Health Promotion designed and implemented a multiorganizational workshop to address the status of and design the future of functional foods. The activity and outcome are described in this report.Presented at the Experimental Biology 98 Symposium, San Francisco, California.
