Effect of rice winery wastewater as a co-substrate to enhance anaerobic digestion of molasses for methane production

In this study, rice winery wastewater (RWW) and molasses were anaerobically co-digested at an increasing organic loading rate (OLR). Both co-substrates with various concentrations and increased OLR (1.875 to 13 g COD L⁻¹) have significantly stabilized the process in terms of COD removal rate and percent methane content in produced biogas. The highest COD removal rate 90.20 ± 0.44 to 92.65 ± 0.38% and maximum methane contents of 69.14 ± 1.4% were observed at feeding OLR of 7 to 13 g and at 3.75 g COD L⁻¹, respectively. However, only molasses at OLR 18.5 g COD/L.d negatively affected anaerobic digestion. The corresponding microbial changes were identified as the dominance of Methanosaetaceae over Methanobacteriaceae at various stages. However, a high abundance of Propionibacteriaceae at the final stage of the process might be responsible for digestion upset. Conclusively, the accumulation of rice winery wastewater as a co-substrate, even at a low concentration, could be a promising approach for a stable digestion process compared to mono-digestion of molasses.
