The use of creatinine output as a check on the completeness of 24-hour urine collections

Clinical studies of volunteers and patients assessed intra-individual variation in daily creatinine excretion and the effect of using para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) as a marker to check the completeness of 24-hour urine collections. Within-individual 24-hour creatinine excretions only varied by 4 per cent in 8 volunteers on uniform diets when completeness of urine collections was assured. Adding cooked meat to a metabolic diet of 4 volunteers increased urinary creatinine excretion 23 per cent. In a 28-day study using the PABA marker, the variation in within-individual 24-hour creatinine excretion (9 per cent) was similar to that in total urinary nitrogen excretion (13 per cent). In a study of 122 samples of 24-hour urinary collections for which completeness was assured, the individual variation in creatinine excretion was 18 per cent. The results indicate the PABA marker method to be more reliable for assuring the completeness of 24-hour urinary collections than creatinine itself.(wz)
