Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in F₄ generation of intervarietal crosses of tomato (_Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Present investigation was undertaken with two crosses, M-3-1 x 18-1-1 (C₁) and M-3-1 x H-36 (C₂) and their parents. Wide range of variability was observed for all the traits in both the crosses in F₄ generation, with higher GCV and PCV for fruit yield per plant, average fruit weight and number of locules per fruit indicating presence of genetic variation for these traits. Higher estimates of heritability in broad sense were observed for almost all eleven characters in both crosses. The association of high heritability with high genetic advance was recorded for fruit weight (91.70% and 38.22%), number of locules per fruit (89.90% and 27.33%) and fruit yield per plant (85.00% and 26.87%) for M-31 x 18-1-1 and for average fruit weight (94.98 and 36.98%), number of locules per fruit (90.63 and 34.29%), fruit yield per plant (80.00% and 29.28%) and pericarp thickness (83.20% and 24.79%) in m-3-1 x H-36.
