Extract: Our objective in this paper has been to identify some of the trade and domestic policy issues that arise because of the trade relationships between Australia, Canada and the United States. It is clear that external shocks radiate through trade relationships to all countries. The impact of these external shocks can be exacerbated or dampened by domestic policy initiatives. The importance of international markets to all three countries raises directly the question of whether cooperation in all trading relationships would be preferable to competitive or independent actions. Further decreases in trade barriers will increase the interdependence of the three countries; they are both partners and competitors in agricultural trade.
