Morphological diversity of spider plant (Cleome gynandra L.) germplasm from different African countries

Cleome gynandra (L.) Briq., one of its common names 'spider plant', is a traditional leafy vegetable in Africa. It is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties such as its ability to reduce risks of degenerative diseases like cardiovascular diseases, some cancer types, inflammation and age-related disorders. Although the consumption of the crop used to be local, its patronage is increasing. Production and consumption of spider plant is increasing but the crop has received little attention from plant breeders for the development of improved cultivars. The objective of this study was to assess diversity available within and among 32 accessions. The accessions were collected from Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda and evaluated at the World Vegetable Center, Arusha, Tanzania in 2014 and 2016. Data collected included fresh and dry marketable vegetable yields, days to 50% flowering, days to 50% maturity, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant and seed yield. This paper presents preliminary results from the 2014 experiment.
