Fetal and infant nutrition and susceptibility to obesity
1978
A workshop report reviews the current state of knowledge of some prenatal and early postnatal determinants of obesity. The underlying concern is whether there are periods of adipocyte tissue increases in early life that predispose to the various types of obesity in adolescence or adulthood. Adipose tissue development and somatic growth, genetic determinants, critical growth periods, and nutritional influences are discussed. There is only presumptive evidence from cross-sectional studies that individuals who are obese as infants or children become obese adults.
