Phosphorus and soft drinks
1983
The phsophorus content of cola-type soft drinks is higher than that of fruit and spice-flavored beverages. Thirteen popular soft drinks were evaluated for phosphorus content (mgP/12oz) to determine the contribution of soft drinks to dietary phosphorus intake and possible effects on the calcium:phosphorus ratio. Excessive phosphorus intake is thought to affect calcium metabolism which could cause calcium deficiency. However, man appears to be able to tolerate wide ranges in the calcium:phosphorus ratio. Intake of high phosphorus soft drinks should be limited in renal patients as should all high phosphorus foods. For healthy individuals, moderate consumption shouldn't affect health. (kbc)
