Intestinal uptake of fatty acids complexed to proteins in the chick intestine

Tests with male chicks indicate that a proportion of fatty acids complexed to lipophilic proteins can be absorbed in the intestine in the absence of bile acids. Increasing the concentration of oleic acid complexes with albumin resulted in a linear increase in mucosal uptake, with no sign of saturation. Uptake of lauric acid from aqueous solution was linear with concentration until its maximum solubility was reached. Uptake from albumin complexes at different lauric acid concentrations was not linear with increasing concentration. Addition of bile acids below their critical micellar concentration did not affect uptake of albumin-complexed fatty acids, but addition above the critical concentration enhanced fatty acid uptake. The presence of albumin resulted in lower uptake of fatty acids from a bile acid/fatty acid system.
