Pathological observations of fatal syngamosis in emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) in Wayan ad District, Kerala

The present paper deals with pathology of syngamosis in three emus. The carcasses of three emu birds brought to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences; Pookode formed the materials of the study. On post-mortem examination, trachea contained haemorrhagic exudates along with large number of ‘V’ shaped red coloured worms identified as Syngamus trachea. Chronic tracheal lesions were observed histologically. Similar to disease seen in turkeys and pheasants, chronic tracheal lesions were present in the aforesaid three cases and it could be inferred that such tracheal lesions present in syngamosis in emu may contribute to the pathogenesis, poor prognosis and thus death of the birds. This also warrants the necessity ofeffective control measures especially when mixed farming is practiced.
