Intralipid clearance and lipoprotein pattern in men with advanced alcoholic liver cirrhosis

Although use of fat emulsions for intravenous feeding of patients with severe liver disease is used cautiously because of the decreased capacity of the diseased liver to handle exogenous triglycerides (TG), the importance of the liver for immediate exogenous TG removal has been questioned. A study of 12 male patients, aged 52 to 74, with advanced alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver revealed very low serum lipid and lipoprotein levels, but normal high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. Serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels were found in about 50% of the control group, very low density lipoprotein-triglyceride levels in 1/3 of the control group. Although the TG clearance in an intravenous fat tolerance test with intralipid decreased, the removal rate was similar in patients and controls.
