This case study describes a 55 year-old woman with a thirty year morbid obesity. The article briefly reviews the pathogenesis and causes of human obesity, focusing on obesity caused by lesions in hypothalamic appetite regulatory centers (hypothalamic obesity). The efficacy of calorie-restricted diets, exercise, pharmacotherapy and behavior modification are summarized.
