Indigenous bacterial antagonists against reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis linford and oliveira in vegetable cowpea

Four indigenous bacterial antagonists of reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis were isolated from rhizosphere of cowpea. Cell free extracts of these bacterial isolates at 100% concentration recorded 88.33 to 96.67 percent egg hatch inhibition (7 days after treatment) and 98.50 to 100.00 per cent juvenile mortality (24 hours after treatment), under in vitro condition. Soil drenching of these isolates (1x10⁷ cfu mL⁻¹) @ 2 mL 100g soil⁻¹ to the root zone of cowpea, significantly reduced the number of females (61.33 to 83.33 per cent), number of egg masses (56.25 to 89.06 per cent), and population of R. reniformis in soil (88.40 to 91.78 per cent). Reproduction factor of R. reniformis was less than 0.5 in treated plants, while in control it was 2.41. Two isolates obtained from egg masses of reniform nematode were identified as Lysinibacillus capsici and Bacillus thuringiensis. Other two isolates obtained from rhizosphere soil of cowpea were identified as Bacillus paramycoides and Bacillus sp.
