A technical report provides an overview of discussions of an expert task force during a review of the state of knowledge and current issues concerning the involvement of psychophysiologic factors in hypertension. Specific attention is given to: personality- and behavior-induced reactivity patterns; physiological responses to behavioral stress; the role of plasma levels of Na and K; and the potential roles of caffeine and nicotine in psychological stress and hypertension. Seven recommendations and conclusions derived from the task force review are summarized.(wz)
