Products of lipolysis in human milk destroy parasites

A brief technical report reviews and discusses the results of recently reported studies concerning the effect of lipid hydrolysis on a widely-distributed parasite, Giardia lamblia, in human milk, noting that infection produced by this parasite appears to occur less frequently in breast-fed infants. The results indicate that free fatty acids produced by the bile salt-stimulated lipase enzyme in human milk are toxic to this parasite. These include a number of C12-C20 fatty acids, as well as several monoacylglycerols.
