A review and assessment of the relevant literature concerning the composition of human and formulated milks, and its effects on normal, low birth weight, and preterm infants with respect to nutrition, milk requirements, milk allergy, protection against infection, and infant and maternal emotional aspects. The report concludes that mature infants receive adequate balanced nutrients for growth from maternal breast milk of adequate quality and quantity; modified formulas provide normal growth; and that human milk protects against gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
