Sulfur and its acidity in acid sulfate soil of Taishan coastal plain in Southern China

The occurrence of sulfur and its potential acidity of Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) was studied in the southern coastal regions of Taishan City, Guangdong, China. The result shows the formation of ASS in the Pearl River Delta was topography related. Locations close to bedrock hill and near sea or river were favorable to the deposit of sulfur at the end of last glacial period. It also relates the depth of sulfur deposit layer, hence the vertical distribution pattern of sulfur in soil profiles. The sulfur content of ASS was 2 to 6 times higher than that of coastal solonchak and 3 to 9 times higher than that of paddy soil. The oxidation of pyrite caused the pH drop down to 3.5 and even to 2.83 in one case. The potential acidity of ASS was 2 to 3 times higher than the actual acidity. The amount of lime needed to correct the potential acid was from 143.5 t ha(-1) to 2687.5 t ha(-1). Awareness of the potential environmental hazard and the method and its cost of prevention are important before the change of land use pattern in ASS area in the Pearl River Delta.
