Feingold diet judged worth a try for hyperkinetic kids

Two researchers are supporting trial use of the controversial additive-free Feingold diet for hyperkinetic children, even though their study is inconclusive. Drs. Sheldon Margen and Bernard Weiss maintain that a few children who are sensitive to artificial food coloring seem to benefit from the regimen. However, the benefits may accrue from either the diet itself or the extra attention given the child. In a study of 22 children, 2 1/2 to 6 years old, the investigators found only one child with a dramatic adverse response to additives. The study used a dose that was 1/50th of the allowable daily intake; as the dose increases, more children may respond adversely, the doctors predict. If the Feingold regimen works, use it, they recommend.
