The family varies from one society to another and between different eras or between classes of the same society. One can observe changes in the family according to the current changes in society. Recent surveys show that in Brazil, although the extended patriarchal family was considered to be predominant, there has always been an abundance of the more simple family models, especially among the poor classes and in the South of the country. In Brazil the empirical-methodological procedures chosen in studies on the family depend on the type of family to be studied, while taking into consideration the social class. Studies have been made of the colonial patriarchal family, rural families, lower class working families, and middle class families. The nuclear family is still predominant in the country, although from the 1980s to the present this form of family organization has shown a decline, especially in urban areas. Based on these studies, this paper presents a brief discussion of the family in Brazil today.
