A technical review examines the effects of dietary protein on renal function and on the etiology of renal disease in experimental animals and humans. Topics include: the effects of protein intake on glomerular filtration (GF) rate and renal plasma flow (RPF) in rodents and sheep and on GF and RPF in humans; the effects of acute protein/amino acid loads on GF rate and RPF; and the effects of dietary protein on renal structure and kidney disease progression in experimental rodent models and on renal failure progression in humans. The results indicate that protein restriction may be of benefit in certain types of renal disease; however, the mechanisms of the effect of changes in protein intake on renal insufficiency progression have not yet been clarified.(wz)
