Nicotianamine--a common constitutent of strategies I and II of iron acquisition by plants: a review

Nicotianamine (NA) is present in all multicellular plants hitherto investigated. The only known exception is the semilethal, recessive tomato mutant chloronerva which develops normally only after exogenous supply of NA. NA is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of phytosiderophores from L-methionine and hence a component of strategy II of iron acquisition. It accumulates in iron deficient barley root tips. NA is a chelator for Fe(II) and other divalent transition metals. In tomato (strategy I), but probably also in strategy II plants, NA is essential for the proper function of Fe(II) dependent processes, such as the regulation of iron deficiency response mechanisms, iron enzymes, and phloem loading/unloading of iron.
