Pancarpal arthrodesis is an elective procedure designed to eliminate pain and dysfunction by deliberate osseous fusion positioning the involved limb segment at a functional angle. Debridement of the articular cartilage, placement of a bone graft and application of a stable fixation with plate and screws represent the surgical requirement for success of the arthrodesis. In order to decrease postoperative complications caused by the use of standard plate, specific pancarpal arthrodesis plates were designed to optimize distal fixation and decrease soft tissue tension during closure. A cast can be put in place, but its necessity is more and more discussed. In spite of morbidity and frequent postoperative complications, functional prognosis for unilateral pancarpal arthrodesis remains good, despite persistent of a mechanical lameness in some cases. Hunting and working dogs can return to activity.
