Effect of different levels of pulse proteins (Bengal gram and lentil) on calcium and phosphorus balance and calcium and phosphorus contents of different tissues and serum

Twenty-four male albino rats were used in an experiment to investigate the effect of pulse proteins on the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. One group was fed 18 percent casein diet (control group). The other two groups were fed pulse proteins (Bengal gram and lentil); one group had 18 percent protein levels, the other had 12 percent protein levels. The control diet group showed a higher calcium balance. No difference in phosphorus balance was found in the three groups. The control group also had the highest serum calcium content. These conclusions were attributed to an insufficient supply of amino acids.
