Effect of glucose and fructose on incubation glycogenic capacity in tissue from mice previously consuming various carbohydrates

The effects of imbibing sucrose and fructose as compared both to tap water and glucose were studied in mice. Fructose enhanced the in vitro glycogen production when given as a pretreatment in drinking water. This enhancement was not increased when fructose was the in vitro substrate for liver slices. Sucrose solution response was generally similar to fructose. Dietary studies of the possible effects of the carbohydrate content of the laboratory chow fed while the mice were drinking the various sweetened solutions revealed little differences in the livers of the mice on the sucrose-based diet and those on the starch-based diet. The addition of cellulose to these diets increased the glycogen levels in vitro.
