A clinical study examined the question of whether a high serum cholesterol level is a secondary risk factor in a large male population (10 annual cohorts representing 1204 subjects) having sustained a first myocardial infarction, over a long period (up to 11 years). Total mortality was higher in the upper cholesterol quintiles. When broken down by age and period of followup, the cholesterol-mortality association was constrained to patients under age 50 during the late followup period. (wz)
