The impact of age-correlated biochemical changes in Nerium oleander leaves on food consumption and utilization efficiency of Daphnis nerii (Linn.) is provided. The relative preference and maximal utilization of young leaves when compared to mature and senescent leaves are attributed to the changes in the chemical profiles such as protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid and nitrogen. Moisture content is the deciding factor. Longevity and fecundity are high, while developmental time is short when insect feed on preferred young leaves. The water budget shows an efficient retention and use of water by larvae on senescent leaves.
