Extract: Medications can affect nutritional status through a variety of mechanisms. Drugs can induce nutrient loss by altering processes involved in nutrient absorption, metabolism, and excretion. Of equal importance is the effect of food and/or nutrients on drug disposition. Either effect poses a risk to patients. Consideration must be given to side effect of drugs which suppress appetite or alter gastrointestinal function. Medicated patients need to be counseled about the importance of diet or any dietary modifications in order to reduce the risk of nutrient changes or altered drug efficacy. (Author)
