Profiles of Nutrient Accumulation by ‘Russet Burbank’ Potato Grown in a Rainfed Production Environment

Nutrient accumulation of ‘Russet Burbank’ potato (Solanum tuberosumL.) was monitored in a rainfed production environment over two seasons in Maine in order to describe accumulation of B, Cu, Zn, and Mn, along with macronutrients N, P, K, Ca, and Mg over time. Average yield over the two seasons was 47.6 Mg/ha. Profiles of B and Mn accumulation appeared to follow shoot growth and peaked about two-thirds of the way through the season. The crop tended to accumulate the other nutrients studied (N, P, K, Ca, Cu, and Zn) until the beginning of senescence. Average rates of nutrient accumulation observed (above-ground shoots plus tubers) were as follows: N, 3.70 kg/ha/day; P, 0.34 kg/ha/day; K, 5.20 kg/ha/day; Ca, 0.73 kg/ha/day; Mg, 0.55 kg/ha/day; Mn, 0.025 kg/ha/day; Zn, 0.0072 kg/ha/day; B, 0.0023 kg/ha/day; and Cu, 0.0017 kg/ha/day. Harvest indices for Ca and Mn were much lower than those of the other nutrients tracked in this study, suggesting that these two nutrients may not be efficiently remobilized from vegetative structures to growing tubers during bulking, and consequently foliar application of Ca and Mn is probably not advisable for supporting tuber growth.
