The effect of dietary zinc deficiency on the concentration and fatty acid composition of phosphatidylinositol bis-phosphate (PIP2) in the isolated erythrocyte membrane was determined. Weanling male rats in the Zn-deficient group were fed an egg white-based diet containing <1 mg Zn/kg diet for 3 weeks; controls were fed the basal diet supplemented with 100 mg Zn/kg diet either ad libitum or feed restricted (6 g diet/day). Dietary Zn deficiency significantly decreased the mole percent of 18:1n-9 and increased the mole percent of 18:2n-6 in PIP2. Dietary Zn deficiency decreased the concentration of PIP2 and of arachidonyl-PIP2, per micromole/lipid phosphorus in the isolated erythrocyte membrane. Restricted-fed rats had intermediate values for these parameters.
