Analysis of Irradiation Induced Virescent Mutants and the Identification of a New Virescent Mutant (v5v5,v6v6) in Gossypium hirsutum L

Seven irradiation induced virescent cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) mutants were analyzed. Four were duplicates of virescent-1 and two were duplicates of yellowgreen. One virescent was independent of all known virescents. The new virescent was conditioned by recessive duplicate factors, and it was assigned the gene symbols v₅v₅,v₆v₆. Linkage analysis showed that the v₅ locus resides in the A subgenome on chromosome 1, adjacent to the Lᴸ locus; and the v₆ locus is on the homeologous D subgenome chromosome 15, adjacent to the Lᵒ locus. No recombination was obtained between v₅ and Lᴸ or v₆ and Lᵒ. The results of this investigation firmly establish the homeology between chromosomes 1 and 15.
