The drought of 1983-1985 in Sudan led to a large number of children becoming undernourished. In order to determine the magnitude of the problem a study was set up to assess the nutritional status of under five year olds across north Sudan, over four periods of time, during 1986-1987. Data were collected on just under 80,000 children from 50,000 households. Undernutrition was widespread across north Sudan with 32% of under five year olds being chronically undernourished and 14% acutely undernourished. Growth retardation began at an early age. Twins and boys were more vulnerable to undernutrition than singletons and girls.
