Trials were conducted in 1976, 1978 and 1979 on a Norfolk loamy sand with soyabean cv. Ransom, Coker 136, FFR666 and Bragg. Nodule infection with R. japonicum strain 110 reached 7-21% on inoculated plots, but was nearer 0% on noninoculated plots. During the severe drought of 1976 and 1978 seed yields were >3 and <1.5 t/ha for irrigated and nonirrigated plots, resp. The short-term drought in 1979 caused significant reductions in leaf-N content of inoculated plants (4.74 and 4.36% on irrigated and nonirrigated plots, resp.). There was a significant variety X irrigation X R. japonicum strain 110 interaction for yield.
