The purpose of this article is to review recent work on food waste at home, mainly in France. Based on a literature review, it seeks to clarify the stakes of these studies both in terms of methodology and results. Indeed, the measurement of food waste at the household level raises questions of method and definitions that find various solutions in the literature. These differences make waste assessments difficult to compare, between surveys using different techniques. To illustrate our point, we will focus on the French case, by comparing two studies, one conducted with a waste audit method, and the other by a survey among households.
