The synthesis and dyeing properties of seven naphthol dyes of the AS Series, different from the parent compound only in that the amide chromaphore group is reversed, is presented. Although the naphthols appear brighter in color than regular naphthols when coupled to the fast-color bases, they are more difficult to apply in application and no not appear to offer any significant advantage over the conventional products in their textile properties. Further, reversing the amide chromaphore appears to inhibit the contribution of the naphthoic substituent to color development.
