Morphology of maize root systems influenced by a local supply of nitrate or ammonia

Sattelmacher, B. | Thoms, K.
In water culture under controlled experimental conditions the effect of a local supply of NO3(-) respectively NH4+ to part of the root system of maize (Zea mays L.) was investigated. In the zone of supply, length of first order laterals but not number increases significantly. This was most pronounced with NH4+. When root zone temperature was locally increased to 25 degrees C while the rest of root system was kept at 20 degrees C, a comparable effect was observed. Possible internal regulation mechanisms responsible for the described morphogenetic effects are discussed.
