Role of zinc in enzyme regulation and protection of essential thiol groups
1986
A review of recent studies of zinc (Zn) metabolism and its functions in metalloenzymes concludes that Zn, besides playing an active role in enzyme activity in Zn metalloenzymes, it also serves to protect essential protein thiol groups from oxidation. These functions are illustrated in this review by the effect of Zn on 2 thiol-containing enzymes: delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase and dihydroorotase.(wz)
