Present status of mango production in Malawi

The mango is produced predominantly along the warm to hot Rift Valley occupied in part by Lake Malawi and the Shire River. Production is by small farmers from a few seedling trees scattered in their fields of maize, groundnuts and tobacco. The orchards consist mainly of local fibrous types, some of which have off-flavours rendering them undesirable on the fresh export market. Improved cultivars like Tommy Atkins, Haden, Keitt and others which have demand overseas were introduced in 1970. These are expected to boost the prospects for commercial production of high quality mango fruit in Malawi for both domestic use and export.
