Biometry and morphology of fruits and disseminules of ornamental palms

The present work aimed to characterize the biometry and morphology of fruits and disseminules of the ornamental palms Phoenix roebelenii O’Brien, Caryota mitis Lour and Livistona chinensis (Jack.) R. Br. ex. Mart. The length, diameter, weight and moisture content of fruits and disseminules were evaluated. The color, form and the main structures of fruits and disseminules were described. The study of the internal morphology followed the cut of the disseminules. The fruits of P. roebelenii and L. chinensis were elliptical and glabrous; the color was described as brilliant red-violet and bluish green, respectively. The disseminules presented the same form as the fruit whose length was larger than the diameter. The fruits of C. mitis were globose and plain, with a color ranging from green to black; their disseminules presented length and width of 1.14 and 1.37 cm, respectively. In all the species, the moisture content of the fruits was higher than 54% and that of the disseminules was higher than 36%. Another characteristic found in the three species studied was the presence of invaginations in the tegument that extended up to the hardened endosperm and underdeveloped embryo, with the length of 2, 4 and 3 mm for the species P. roebelenii, C. mitis and L. chinensis, respectively.
