Sequential sampling plan for northern and western corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in New York

A series of sequential sampling plans (3 based on Iwao's method and 15 based on Wald's method) were evaluated for the adult northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica barberi (Smith & Lawrence) and western corn rootworm, D. virgifera virgifera Leconte, in New York. Sequential plans were developed using theoretical distributions based on information in the literature. The sampling plans were validated using 1987 and 1988 field data from western New York. Wald's methods were more accurate and theoretically sound than Iwao's. A sequential plan developed using Wald's methods, with a k value of 2.45 and hypotheses width from 0.75 to 1.25 insects per plant, was chosen as the best for agreement with, and time savings over, the fixed plan. This plan resulted in average time savings of 55.2% and gave 99% agreement with the decisions of the currently used fixed-site sampling plan. The average sample number was 18.0 for 1987 data and 18.3 for 1988 data, compared with 55 samples for the fixed plan. This plan shows robustness for the corn belt from Iowa to New York.
