The prickly pear Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., like most crops, yields its useful parts in the shoot portion of the plant. For this reason, when we refer to the nutritional aspects, different fertilization problems have been reported with chemical and organic products limiting their evaluation effects on yield and phenology. In the present work, carried out under hydroponics, the doses of 100, 150, and 200 mg L(-1) N of a nutrient solution were studied in order to determine the influence of this element on root development of two vegetable varieties of prickly pear (Jalpa and Villanueva). The varieties behaved in a different way according to the doses of N supplied. The most efficient of these crops according to the absorption of nutrients was the Jalpa variety.
